I discovered fencing in 2018 while working away from home. One evening, I attended a local club offering an Introduction to Fencing course—and I’ve never looked back. I always thought of myself as a non-sporty person, but I’ve come to realize I just hadn’t found the right sport for me. Fencing is unique in that it’s both an individual and social sport. While I sometimes struggle with traditional team games, fencing allows me to focus on my personal growth while still being part of a supportive community.

My journey into coaching began when my neurodiverse son, Riley, showed an interest in fencing. Like many parents of neurodiverse children, I worried that traditional coaching methods might not suit him. To support him, I trained as a coach so I could provide 1-on-1 guidance when he started his Introduction to Fencing course. While he ultimately chose a running club instead, my passion for coaching had already taken root.

I believe that everyone is capable of fencing, and I make every effort to create an inclusive environment, regardless of ability. This belief drives my approach as a coach, ensuring that fencing is accessible to as many people as possible. I hold a Level 1 ICTF coaching qualification, which allows me to coach beginners in a club setting and deliver plastic fencing sessions in the community.

At my club, I fence primarily with an épée, though I originally trained with a foil, and our plastic weapons for beginners are also foils. When I first volunteered as a junior coach, I quickly noticed that one child was having difficulties during sessions. It became clear that they were experiencing overstimulation, which was affecting their ability to participate. I began working with them 1-on-1, making small adjustments each week to better suit their needs. Over time, they gained confidence, and now they actively take part in group sessions—one of my proudest moments as a coach.

Fencing has taught me so much about myself. It has helped me become more patient, adaptable, and strategic—both on and off the piste. While I recognize that my competitive days are behind me, I’ve embraced a new role: giving back to the sport and helping others discover its benefits.

Looking ahead, my focus is on grassroots coaching—introducing fencing to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to try it. I hope to expand my qualifications to Level 2 and ultimately become a member of the British Fencing Development Team, helping to train more coaches and grow the sport within local communities.
